History
Pinehurst was developed in 1895 by
Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker
Tufts, who desired to build a southern
winter retreat and a health-driven resort
for recovery of the day's maladies. Tufts
purchased 5,000 acres of ravaged
timberland in the Sandhills of North
Carolina and built an inn and New England
style village he called Tuftstown. He
later changed it to Pinehurst, after
selecting the name from a runners-up list
in a town-naming contest in the New
England coastal area. It officially opened
for its first season on December 31, 1895,
and has since hosted some of the most
famous athletes, business leaders,
philanthropists, government officials and
heroes from America and beyond.
Pinehurst's evolution as a revered golf
venue is rooted in the 1898 development of
its first golf course. However, it was the
hiring of Donald J. Ross as golf
professional in 1900 that undeniably
altered the focus of Pinehurst Resort
forever. His famed No. 2 course has laid
claim to and continues to serve as the
site of some of the most honored amateur
and professional golf events in the world
