Anthem Country Club
Greg Nash Design has crafted two equally stunning yet
distinct courses at Anthem: The
Persimmon which debuted to outstanding reviews in 1999, and The
Ironwood, which opened in 2004. The layouts share some key
attributes: large, undulating greens; dramatic elevation changes; Valley
and mountain views; deep canyon washes; rolling fairways, and multiple
tees. Both stretch more than 7,200 yards from the back tees, and they
put a premium on accuracy and course strategy.

Grayhawk
Golf Club
Raptor
Course & Talon Course
Tom
Fazio Design
7,135
yd. - Par 72 - Rating/Slope 74/136
Bigger and bolder than its sister course to the
south (Talon), the Raptor takes off, soaring and scoring to new
heights. Built by architect supreme Tom Fazio, the Raptor is
guaranteed to knock your golf socks off, especially if you're not
firing on all cylinders. The signature hole is the 174-yard eighth
hole, a unique par-3 dubbed "Aces & Eights.'' For the
uninitiated, "aces and eights" is the poker terminology
associated with a "dead man's hand,'' so make sure to shoot
your tee shot as straight as humanly possible.

Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club
Robert Trent Jones II
Design
7,008 yd. - Par 72 -
Rating/Slope 72.7/131
Robert Trent Jones II carved Dove Valley Ranch
out of the desert just below Black Mountain, and it turned out
beautifully. Even better, the green fee is a bargain in a
neighborhood filled with elite - and expensive! - golf courses.

Golf Club at Eagle Mountain
Scott Miller Design
6763 yd. - Par 71 -
Rating/Slope 72.4/139
After working with Jack
Nicklaus on such projects as Desert Highlands and Desert
Mountain, Scott Miller set out on his own, creating some
great golf courses in his wake. One of those is Eagle
Mountain, a rambling track that is draped around the
mountain of the same name. Even though Eagle Mountain has
numerous blind shots, ubiquitous bunkering and greens that
seem to undulate at will, there is a lot to like about
this championship golf course.

Longbow Golf Club
7003 yd. - Par 71 -
Rating/Slope 72.2/129
The new Longbow Golf Club was unveiled
in the fall of 2003. Following a complete redesign
with the addition of a striking new clubhouse, expanded
acreage and totally revamped practice facility, Longbow,
more than ever is a “must-play.” The
new design improves upon perfection by lengthening the
total yardage to 7,003 from the back tees, expanding the
fairways and boosting par to 71. The intrigue and
shot making choices that players will face are infinite.
The distinctive new Arizona contemporary clubhouse is a
one-of-a-kind structure that offers every amenity
including a spacious outdoor event patio with fans,
heaters, misters, outdoor kitchen and bar, enormous patio
fireplace, convenient drive-up snack shop, cozy
restaurant, and well-appointed golf shop.

Mariott's Wildfire
Golf Club
Nick
Faldo Design 7145 yd. - Par
71
Nick Faldo, winner of three Masters and three
British opens, says that this course is not reminiscent of other
Arizona layouts, saying that he wants his courses to have rhythm
and flow, with more bark than bite. He has certainly done a fine
job on the newest 18-hole course, the Faldo Course, located
directly adjacent to the Palmer Course. The par 71 layout sits on
a 174-acre site, and offers a slight variation from typical
Sonoran Desert-theme courses.

Las Sendas Golf Club
Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Design
6,834 yd. - Par71 -
Rating/Slope 73.8/149
When a golf course has a
slope of 149, there is no other way to approach it but
very cautiously. Obviously, this extremely demanding
layout is just the way Robert Trent Jones Jr. had it
planned. Despite the difficulty, players stream back by
the hundreds, and here is why: Few courses in the Valley
offer such spectacular vistas and subsequent shot making
as Las Sendas.

The Raven at South
Mountain
Gary Panks & David
Graham Design
7,056 yd. - Par 72 -
Rating/Slope 73.9/133
Gary Panks and Senior PGA Tour star David Graham
created the Raven out of a cotton field at the base of South
Mountain by moving nearly 200,000 cubic yards of dirt. If all of
that movement was not enough, they added 7,100 pine trees to the
mix. Today, the Raven at South Mountain has become Arizona's
version of famed Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. The Raven spreads its
wings freely, offering a unique feel that fits in somewhere
between a mountain and a Midwestern golf course.

The Sanctuary at
Westworld
Randy Heckenkemper Design
6,624 yd. - 71 Par
- Rating/Slope 71.7/`35
Working under the strict but caring guidelines
of the Audubon International Institute, The Sanctuary is just what
its name implies. The enchanting environment, where emerald-green
fairways roll alongside environmentally protected areas, is proof
that golfers, wildlife and plants can all co-exist in harmony.
Architect Randy Heckenkemper has produced a most playable layout
that takes advantage of the natural terrain and vegetation only as
a backdrop to the game at hand.

SunRidge Canyon Golf
Club
Keith Foster Design
6,823 yd. - 71 Par
At SunRidge Canyon Golf Club, golf
isn't merely a sport. It's an adventure. This 6,823-yard, par-71
layout designed by Keith Foster is hidden among the ridges and
canyons of the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, widely
considered one of the most picturesque and dramatic stretches of
natural land left in the Southwest. The beauty and challenge of
this golf experience has made SunRidge Canyon one of the most
highly rated clubs in Arizona.

Tonto Verde Golf Club
Gary Panks & David
Graham Design
6,737 yd. - 72 Par -
Rating/Slope 74.1/140
Tucked into the Verde River
Valley just below the awesome span of rock known as the
Four Peaks sits Tonto Verde. It is difficult understand
why the Spanish translation - "stupid green" -
would be used to name these golf courses, the original
Peaks and the tougher playing Ranch, as both border on
brilliant. Gary Panks and David Graham designed the Peaks,
which features pure desert golf accented by fairways lined
with mesquite trees.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club
Scott Miller Design
7,124 yd. - 72 Par -
Rating/Slope 72.5/130
Scottsdale architect Scott Miller has created
some wonderful golf courses in the past decade. Such dazzling
desert gems as Eagle Mountain and Kierland come to mind, along
with the highly private DC Ranch. But Miller's latest layout - We-Ko-Pa
on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Reservation near Fountain Hills -
might end up being his signature course in Arizona.

The Boulders
Jay Morrish Design
North - 6,980 yd. - 72 Par -
Rating/Slope 76.5/144
South - 6,926 yd. - 71 Par -
Rating/Slope 76.6/145
Architect supreme Jay Morrish built
the two courses at the Boulders, even though they are a mish-mash
of efforts he shares with Jack Snyder and Red Lawrence, who
constructed the original nine way back in 1969. Of the two
layouts, the South is the stronger and more scenic. Still, the
North remains at the top of Arizona’s finest resort courses.
Expect a tough, tight start at the South, with the spectacular
shots actually beginning at the fifth hole, one of the best par-5s
in the state.
