Jacksonville – Florida

It all started back in back in 1980 when then PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beaman wanted to create a venue for THE PLAYERS Championship to play every year – TPC Sawgrass. Up until then THE PLAYERS Championships rotated around the country. The PGA TOUR wanted to have a facility for them and their players hence the TPC Network was launched and the first site was the TPC Sawgrass located in Ponte Verde Beach, Florida. Orginally started as an 18 – hole facility, The Stadium golf course was constructed like no other facitlity. Deane Beaman contracted Pete Dye to design and oversee construction of the golf course. Known for challenging golfers of all skill levels Mr. Dye made his mark on The Stadium course. The Stadium Course was built with the spectator in mind as the name fits the course. Each teeing and green surround are constructed in a manner that crowds can sit on natural mounds and humps for optimal viewing.

Pete Dye created a masterpiece as no one golfer is rewarded, the total golfer will reign as The Players Champion. His imaginative style to golf course architecture winds his way around all 18 holes at The Stadium. From the true 3 shot par-5 ninth, to the risk reward par-5 11th the design gives the opportunity for all golfers to compete. The signature 17th has often been called the toughest shot in golf…don’t believe us just ask this years runner up David Toms. Early on the golf course was touted as to tough to play; however, after modifications the PGA Tour Players have come to embrace this world class facility. A second 18 holes was added, The Valley Course to round out the facility. The Valley course compliments The Stadium course winding through Florida wildlife, creeks, and marshlands.

In 2007, TPC Sawgrass went under an enormous renovation. The new clubhouse:

77,000 square foot
11,000 square foot event lawn over looking Nos. 9 and 18 is large enough to hold 4 tennis courts
63,000 square feet of Spanish tile were used on the roof — totaling 612,000 pounds, which is equivalent to 2 Boeing 747s, 300 African elephants

TPC Sawgrass Golf Course:

26,600 tons of sand were used in reconstructing the Pete Dye Stadium Course (tees and fairways)
2,600,000 square feet of new grass areas on the Stadium course
5,000 linear feet of new bulk head surrounding the lakes
19 acres of sod were used across the property, which is equivalent to 12 city blocks
